Unleash the wolves! - Adeptus Astartes
Mudbox, Photoshop, VRay, XSI
January 2009

The passion for Warhammer 40k took over again and resulted in the creation of this Spacemarine of the Spacewolf chapter. I wanted to create a look which fits to the descriptions in the books and creates a sort of impact I imagined a Spacemarine might have. They are sometimes depicted like dumbos or in weird proprotions whereas I imagined them to be more like a tidal wave of destructive rage bringing nothing but despair to the emperor's foes- just like befits a 800 pound armour clad 2 1/2 metre tall chainsword wielding juggernaut... if you know what I mean..
The warriors of the spacewolf chapter are particularly nice and folksy chaps by the way.
Workflow wise this was a bit of the beaten path as I was still sick from my last unwrapping excourse and- more importantly have just recently discovered Mudbox. So I created a basemesh in XSI sculpted in Mudbox and rendered the (raw!) highres meshes with a 3point lighting setup and painted all texturework on top of that in photoshop. The head is the only proper unwrapped/ textured object here. The head and all hair/ fur has been done in XSI and put together in photoshop.
Here are a few crop images from a higher res and a clumsy GIF of the applied process.
